Baran and Katelyn had the most beautiful August wedding, located right in Katelyn’s family’s backyard. I’m a firm believer that backyard weddings leave space for originality, relaxation, and of course a feeling of being right at home! However, I do believe this feeling can be created at a wedding venue with the right mindset. My advice is to always go into your day with no expectations. Knowing that whatever is meant to happen will happen can help with being present on your day, just like Baran and Katelyn on their day.
The story of Baran and Katelyn – They met for their first date on a sunlit corner of Harvard Square and made their way over to a bar before their dinner reservation. They chatted about their past and wishes for the future over a bottle of red wine. Before they knew it, it was time for their dinner reservation. As they left the bar, a jazz band appeared outside that had not been there before. Without a second thought, Baran pulled Katelyn out in front of the crowd watching the band and they danced without a care in the world. They then made their way to dinner and as Katelyn puts it “have not stopped dancing since”.
I wanted to share this story because it perfectly encapsulates their wedding day and the two of them as a couple – perfectly happy being themselves and an overall joy to be around. Baran is from Turkey and most of Katelyn’s family is from Ireland. Their day was a joyous moment of two families meeting for the first time. Every moment felt natural and overall intentional.
A few of my favorite details from the day – Katelyn’s family home that sits right in the center of a historic New England town, the home was buzzing with good energy all morning. The wedding party dresses that perfectly showed each person’s style and personality. The circular ceremony set-up so each guest had a perfect view of the couple. Katelyn entered the ceremony first and each person from the wedding party walking in with flowers to hand to her, creating her bouquet. The poolside cocktail hour. Katelyn’s cousin singing their first dance song. Lastly and maybe most obvious, the epic dancefloor.
A few words from Katelyn about their day and experience working with me –
“Where do I even begin with Emily? What an absolute joy and visionary to work with. She has a dream way of shooting your special day, reminiscent of old films depicting love and the beauty of the moments in between.
I had no hesitation in reaching out to her for our wedding and engagement shoot, and little did I know I would be making a dear friend. As a photographer myself, I was very particular about what style I wanted for our photos and what energy we wanted to exude. She understood the assignment, to say the least, because she captured dreams, not just documenting a day.
Emily is, without question, the best wedding/engagement/ love anything photographer, and I hope to shoot family and couple sessions with her in the future.
The comfort felt, and the bond shared is worth it. She made me, my family, and my friends feel effortlessly comfortable, and we will be holding these images close to all of us across the world as a beautiful memory captured through her eyes.”
